Osteoporosis

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone density and deterioration of bone tissue. When you have osteoporosis, your bones become brittle and prone to fracturing.

The disease often develops slowly over several years without any symptoms. Many people don’t know they have osteoporosis until their bones become so weak that a minor bump or fall causes a broken bone (fracture).

What causes loss of bone density?

As we age, existing bone breaks down faster than new bone can form to replace it. In the first few decades of life, new bone formation outpaces loss, reaching peak bone mass in your 20s. After that, bone loss exceeds formation.

For women, bone loss accelerates after menopause due to declining estrogen levels. Low estrogen allows an increase in bone-damaging osteoclasts. Certain lifestyle factors like smoking, low calcium intake, and lack of exercise can also contribute to bone loss.

Who is at risk for osteoporosis?

While anyone can develop osteoporosis, some people are at higher risk:

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends adults get their bone mineral density (BMD) tested starting at age 50 to check for osteoporosis risk. Those with additional risk factors may need earlier screening.

What are symptoms of osteoporosis?

In the early stages, osteoporosis has no signs. You may start experiencing symptoms once your bones have significantly deteriorated and become vulnerable to fracturing. Common osteoporosis symptoms include:
